Letter of Support for “Consumer Protection and Due Process Act”
The Honorable Mike Lee
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Lee:
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce supports the “Consumer Protection and Due Process Act,” which would provide the Federal Trade Commission with tools to combat scams and fraud, help consumers harmed by such conduct, and ensure necessary due process protections.
The bill would authorize the Commission to pursue equitable remedies for unfair and deceptive trade practices when “a reasonable person would have known, under the circumstances [the act or practice] was unfair and deceptive” causing proximate harm to an individual.
Additionally, the Consumer Protection and Due Process Act would provide appropriate safeguards for legitimate businesses, including a reasonable three-year statute of limitations.
At a time when some are calling to erode due process at the Federal Trade Commission, the business community appreciates Senator Lee’s leadership. We look forward to working with you to protect consumers from scams and unfair and deceptive conduct the right way.
Sincerely,
Neil L. Bradley
Executive Vice President, Chief Policy Officer,
and Head of Strategic Advocacy
